Answers to Your Questions

1. How fast can I realistically grow my business?

A. This depends on several factors, such as demographics, competition, available resources (money) and time to name a few. The demographics play an important role in a pooper scooper business. After all, if you live in a farming community, then this business may not be right for you. Ideally, I like to see a community of at least 200,000 in population. Of course the more the merrier. Since 1/3 of the US population owns a dog, that would give you a base of about 130,000 dog owners. All you need to do is convert one tenth of one percent and you’re making a pretty decent income. If you haven’t read my book yet, that equates to about 130 customers and about $7000 a month in income. Pretty easy to do part time.

Next, do you have any competition? If not, that’s OK. If you do, that’s better! Why? Because if there are more than one scooping company in your area, then there are more scooping companies advertising and marketing in your area. Half the battle in this business is getting the word out that the business exists. Once people see scooping companies in their area, they will start talking about it and the word will spread. Eventually they will start searching for a company and you want them to find yours.

In order for potential customers to find you, you will have to do some advertising and marketing. That can range form something as cheap as hand printed flyers to billboards and TV commercials. How you obtain customers is not the scope of this topic, but there are several methods outlined in the book, and in these Q and A’s.

So to finally answer the question, it depends on several factors. Seriously, if your finances are on the low side and all you can do is spring for a 1000 flyers each month you can expect to gain 10 to 20 customers a year if you’re lucky. If you are a little more liquid and can do a flyer campaign along with some cheap classified advertising and  some networking, perhaps you can gain about 20 to 30 customers a year. If you still keep the marketing budget on the affordable side and can do a flyer campaign, business networking, some classified advertising, implement a good referral program, conduct a smart direct mail campaign around the area of your customers, and a maintain a good web presence, then you could very well obtain 50 plus customers in your first year. If you are established in the business, with a strong marketing plan, you can gain an additional 100 customers a year if you work hard at it. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and your results could vary.
